Maybe God want’s to learn me a lesson

I heard some women in church talking about the calling upon their lives the other day. One of them said that she always thought of what she was called to do and the future and all that when she was younger. “Now I don’t think so much of that any more”, she said. Those words caused me to think. Maybe we shouldn’t think so much of what we are called to do. The relationship with God is the most important thing, not the calling nor the gifts… I think TOO much, as I’ve written here before, of the future and of my calling and so on. A preacher on Midvinterveckan’06-07 told the congregation that “Your christian life shouldn’t be built on prophecies - It should be based on the Word of God, His promises in the Bible!” That’s so true. Maybe God want’s to learn me a lesson.

  1. It would seem that the calling on a Christian’s life would be different than specific prophecies for them about other matters, unless I misunderstand your post.

It is wise to always follow after God’s Word rather than prophecies.

But if a person knows what God wants them to do with their lives, it prevents them wasting time doing other things.

  2. Greetings. Indeed, to stay in prayer and in the word of God. If we do these things, all else will fall into place; even where we are to be. I read another blog recently which stated “The way to know if Gods calling you to do something is that he will keep on calling.” He’ll place in our heart a desire to do that which he’s called us to. In all instances, we’re to just love him in all sincerety and do what we know to do. He’ll call at the proper moment; right on time.
Great post and a good nsight on this situation.
Have a blessed day in Christ.

  3. Cumby, I’m afraid you misunderstood the quote in the text but I don’t know how to explain it furthermore in English…
But anyway, what you two wrote is true.

  4. Sorry I misunderstood. You express yourself quite well considering that English is not your first language.

What I understand the “calling” on someone’s life to be is when God speaks to the heart of a person, and expresses His desire for them to go in a certain direction in their life’s work.

For example: I’ve always been a musician and so did praise and worship in the churches. But God’s desire for me is to preach the Gospel, so that’s what I mostly do now. It took until the age of 49 to hear that and obey. If people heard those instructions at a younger age, they could save being frustrated.

  5. Thanks, Cumby! And great to hear that you preach the Gospel now!!

Didn’t you ask God before what you were ‘called to do’, or didn’t you listen to your heart’s desire? Did you ever think of preaching before you were 49?

    Thanks for the insights.

  6. If you study how the word “calling” is used in the Bible, it refers to the “calling to faith in Christ,” or to put it another way, to be Christ to those around us wherever we are.

Certainly God can “call” or lead us in other decisions, too, but in this there does not have to be one calling, it will come when it is time. It is God’s work, and when he wishes for us to take action, we will know through the desire he puts in our heart, His Word, those circumstances that come up, and the advise of those well founded in faith–we need not fret over what or when, but seek his face and he will show us all things in his time.

If missions is on your heart or some other ministry, remember that God may prepare you and the right time to go may be later, like Dr. Mathias at IsoKirja who had been a school teacher for many years, then he built churches, then he taught in Bible school, and now he works with a church–I do not doubt that God led him every step of the way.

This can be called the Macedonian call (see Acts 16:6-10), where Paul was working for the Gospel already, but at the right time, God gave him the call to pass to Europe. Our calling is to be Christ to those around us, and sometimes God “calls” us in different directions.

“I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD” (Psalm 27:13,14).
